THE next morning, she pauses in the hallway when she hears Kevin on the phone. “She’s almost eighteen.” His voice sounds tense. “At least think about it.”

“Who was that?”

He jumps as she walks into the kitchen and bangs his elbow on the counter. “Jesus Christ, Allison! Don’t sneak up on me like that. You scared the shit out of me.”

“I’m sorry. Who’s almost eighteen besides me?”

“No one. We need to leave. We’re late. And you won’t be eighteen for months.”

They get in his truck and head to school. Maybe he’s planning a surprise party, although Connie would never let him invite people over. And then she remembers Glenn’s upcoming party and has an idea. The people Peggy works with would buy cocaine from Kevin. They have money.

“Want to go to a party with my sister?”
